Three Simple Singing Exercises

The proper singing exercises are necessary for both new and seasoned singers alike in order to keep the vocal cords in good shape. Knowing some basic singing exercises can help anyone who is interested in singing to get on the right track.

First Step in Singing Exercises: Breathing Breathing techniques are a very important part of singing. It helps to regulate oxygen intake which plays a part in the sounds of each note, and also helps to control pitch. Start by breathing slowly in through the nose and out through the mouth a few times. Once you have achieved a calmness, breath a little faster almost as if you are panting. Start again slowly and speed up until you are panting again, repeating three times. Then breath in and out only through the mouth only slowly and deliberately four to five times.

Second Step in Singing Exercises: Vocalizing Similar to the breathing exercises, these singing exercises will help to maintain proper pitch and tone. You can start off by repeating the sound “le” and then “la” one after another. Start in a low pitch and repeat the sounds until you reach your highest possible pitch then repeat three to four times. Afterward, start at your highest pitch and work your way down. With continuous practice, you should start noticing higher and lower range capabilities.

Third Step in Singing Exercises: Song Practice Using simple songs, it is easy to practice range, pitch and tone. You should start by singing a song like row, row, row your boat or twinkle, twinkle little star. This is because the less you have to worry about the right words, the more you can focus on how you deliver each word as a note in the song. You can even simply borrow the tune of a song and make up your own words like singing “mom” or “dog” over and over again. This technique will afford you the same results as using a traditional song for singing exercises.

Warm Up Singing Exercises

Many people don’t realize that singing uses muscles and we need to warm up with singing exercises.  These muscles, often referred to as your vocal cords, are just like any other muscle in the fact that they need to be stretched before any strenuous activity.  When you are doing physical activity, you might stretch your arms or your legs to prepare them for the strain of what is to come.  That is how you should think of warm up singing exercises.  They are not simply a pointless and silly way for your vocal coach to fill up time.  They are critical since you don’t want to over stretch and over use your vocal cords.

A very common warm up involves singing simple scales.  Almost anyone who has been involved with music and singing knows how to sing a scale so this is a simple way to warm up if you aren’t familiar with any other singing exercises.  Once you sing a scale, you can continue to sing scales by modulating by 1/2 step increments either up or down until you reach the point you can’t sing any higher or lower without straining your voice.  You can do variations of a scale by starting at the top and singing down first and then go back up, or you can simply sing to the 5th note of the scale and back down. 

Another great exercise to try to warm up your voice before singing is humming.  One important thing to keep in mind when doing something like humming is that you still have to maintain proper breath support and control during theses warm up singing exercises.  Breathing from your diaphragm and getting proper breath support is key in anything having to do with singing or stretching your vocal cords.  Warming up while humming is a good exercise to stretch those muscles and practice proper breathing before you sing.

Some other great exercises to try are lip and diction exercises.  Your lips are heavily involved in the singing process, and they need to be warmed up as well.   You can try to do the lip exercises that sounds like a baby making a “razz” sound.  This will relax your lips and take some pressure off of your vocal cords while you are warming up.  If you are warming up before some kind of concert or performance, it is probably a good idea to do some singing exercises to practice diction.  Sing a scale on different consonant sounds such as “ta ta ta.”  Any of these, and more, will prepare you for how you will have to enunciate clearly for people to understand you.  After these exercises, your voice should be ready to perform.
